Thru: Large Secure File Transfer

Many people need to transfer large files, on the order of 100MB and up. For example:

  • Hospitals sending patient records.
  • Architects exchanging building plans.
  • Engineers collaborating on product designs.

However, it's tough to transfer large files electronically. Email often can't handle anything more than 10MB or 20MB, and FTP sessions get broken and don't recover well.

Some companies offer specialized solutions. Thru is an example.

Technology

  • Thru Server: Secure Content Delivery and Archiving System.
  • File transfers up to 25GB.
  • File synchronization.
  • Encryption. Useful if the file needs to be protected from unauthorized eyes.
  • Email and file archiving.
  • Audit trails.
  • Server available since 1992 on Unix platforms, on Windows since 2002.
  • Outlook and Notes plugins.
  • Available as customer-premises software or SaaS.
  • Web services API for integration with third-party applications.

List Pricing

  • On-premises software: Server is $18K, plus about $20 per seat.
  • SaaS: Priced per seat, with an additional price for extra space. For example, 1,000 seats are $5/seat/month, including 60GB of storage. Above 60GB is $10 to $15 per GB.

Main Competition

  • Tumbleweed, Ipswitch, Accellion, GlobalScape, Sterling Commerce.

Company and Finances

  • 45 employees.
  • Founded in 2002 as a spin-off of Silicon Graphics.
  • Not profitable.
  • Around $5M of external investment from angel investors. Currently raising venture Series A of $3M to $4M.
  • Ferris Research estimates revenues at $4M annually.
